Bunions are typically caused from trying to put too much foot into too little shoe, especially shoes that have a small toe area like women’s dress shoes. A bunion is a bump on the big toe. It causes the big toe to protrude outwards at the base and towards the other toes at the tip. Heredity can play a part in the formation of bunions if your family is prone to a weakness called hallux valgus. If this is the case you would want to do all that you could to prevent it from forming. You can do this by going barefoot as much as possible or by wearing shoes with a bigger toe area instead of pointed shoes.
Some shoe stretchers also come with holes in them that you can put plugs in to create extra room for corns or . These plugs, sometimes known as Orthoplugs, protrude out from the shoe stretcher so you can get extra stretch right where you need it.
Secondly, consider the way the shoe fits. Unlike regular shoes, the Vibram shoes with toes should not have space beyond your Halux Valgus. Your foot should be hugged comfortably from heel to toe with no wiggle room, but also without being constrained or scrunched up. Most wide feet fit into FiveFinger toe shoes, because the fabrics used in the construction are light and stretchy.
To relieve the pressure and pain you can change your footwear to new soft shoes that are wider and give more room in the toe box area. In more severe cases like when the hammer toe becomes more rigid, surgery is required to correct the deformity. Your Podiatrist can advise on toe exercises that can be done at home, like stretching and strengthening the muscles. Hammer toes never get better without intervention. Orthoses also help to re-align and re-balance the feet.
Shoe materials like suede and leather provide not only more flexibility but comfort because the material is able to conform to the shape of the foot and exert less resistance in sensitive areas.
Generally, if you have Foot Pain there is something that is not correct. You may have other signs and symptoms. You may have hip, back or knee pain and not connect it to your feet.
Some shoes can be modified by stretching the areas that put pressure on your toes. Splints to reposition the big toe and orthotics (special shoe inserts shaped to your feet) also may relieve pain. For bunions caused by arthritis, medications can be prescribed to reduce pain and swelling.
You have to be aware that foot bunions are permanent. If you want them removed, surgical removal is the only way. No cream or lotion can soften a hard bunion. Please take care of your feet by allowing it to rest and to be positioned in a proper way. Wear proper and comfortable shoes that are not too tight to ensure that the toes are in good condition.
